Retracing cranes & Peaches (2020)

In the summer of 2019 I began sifting through books on Korean art history and stumbled across a painted 12 panel folding screen by an unknown Korean artist. This work Cranes & Peaches (circa 1902) combined traditional and modern techniques as the Korean Empire began adopting Western influences and underwent rapid modernization.
I scanned the Cranes & Peaches image from the book, used Photoshop to, among other things, lighten the colours and remove the gold leaf. I then blew the image up and transferred them onto twelve drywall compound layered wood panels and engraved the outlines of the removed the gold leaf.
